Hi Bryan, you don’t need to add topsoil to your compost bin. If you are adding the appropriate amount of carbon and nitrogen, it should be breaking down fairly quickly and turning into quality compost. You can likely still add cow manure to it or if it is already composted cow manure, just add it to your finished compost when you are going to apply it to your plants and garden. Hope that helps and have fun growing!

I have been using compost in a wooden 4×4 bin for over a year and seem to have a good balance of nitrogen and carbon. I have been using the compost for plants and then as it gets low I had some more top soil and a bag of cow manure. Are you supposed to keep adding dirt to the pile as well?

Aaron,

When reading your suggestion I asked, ‘if I was a worm, would I like to be ‘tumbled’?
My answer was ‘ahhh…no…no, I wouldn’t.’

Thank you.

Hi Dan, I would keep the worms in a worm bin or tower, some of the worms may survive in your compost tumbler but I am not sure they would thrive, it may also be more difficult to manage the contents of the tumbler to make the environment as hospitable for your worms. It would also be difficult to harvest the castings as you would have to empty the entire contents of the tumbler, including all of the worms which would make you have to sift through the castings even more to separate the worms and return them to their home. Hope that helps and thanks for supporting our site!

Thank you for your website.

My question is, should/ could I put worms in a green/brown compost tumbler or keep them separate in a worm bin?

Take care.
